28.10.2023 –  A Spectacular Day in the Marine Realm: Bottlenose Dolphins, Loggerhead Turtle, Sperm Whales, and Blainville’s Beaked Whales

Published by Paula Thake on November 4, 2023

Off the coast of Madeira, in front of Calheta, today a breathtaking array of oceanic creatures graced us with their presence. The azure waters bore witness to an exquisite display of nature’s wonders, leaving us awe-inspired.

First on the scene were the charismatic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), renowned for their playful and acrobatic nature. Their sleek bodies danced through the waves, breaching repeatedly in a joyful display of energy.  As the sun cast its golden rays upon the sea, we were treated to a more tranquil encounter – a massive loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) gracefully gliding through the crystal-clear waters. We were able to admire it distinctive shell as it was calmly exploring our boat. The loggerhead’s presence added a touch of ancient wisdom to the day’s spectacle.

In the midst of this mesmerizing sighting, a little bit further out , the atlantic surprised us with the colossal figures of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) emergin through the water. Their iconic square heads and powerful tails created a scene of both power and grace.

Although, the sun was already setting, surprises were far from over. Amidst the undulating waves, elusive Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) made a guest appearance. These enigmatic creatures, with their distinctive beaks and mysterious habits, provided a glimpse into the hidden world of deep-sea mysteries.

As we reflect on this extraordinary day, we are reminded of the profound beauty and diversity that our oceans hold. Each encounter, from the exhuberant dolphins to the ancient turtle and the majestic giants of the deep, left a ‘forever’ mark on our souls. It is moments like these that underscore the importance of preserving and protecting these precious marine ecosystems, ensuring that future generations can also be touched by the magic of the sea.
