Today our eyes wandered over the sea in search of dolphins and whales. A lot of patience was required. In the morning we saw a group of Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) in the distance. This species of whale dives long and deep. A dive lasting three hours and forty-two minutes was measured off the coast of North Carolina. This is the longest dive ever recorded by a marine mammal. Their diving depth is 2000-3000 m. This makes them one of the record holders in both categories.
At midday the eyes wandered over the sea again. A lot of patience was required. We drove far and long so that at the end we were able to observe four Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) right in front of the harbor. For a few moments the dolphins were friendly to us and came into the bow wave. Bottlenose dolphins dive to 300-400m.
And how deep can a person dive? In 2007, Apnoe diver Herbert Nitsch managed to descend to a depth of 214 m with one breath. Also a great achievement for us humans.
