26.07.2023 – A Closer Look at the Enigmatic Rough-Toothed Dolphin

Published by Paula Thake on August 3, 2023

Today, we share the exciting and captivating sightings that unfolded on the boats Ribeira Brava and Stenella, off the breathtaking shores of Madeira Island.

At 9:30 AM, the magic began with the appearance of the graceful Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) and the majestic Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris). These splendid marine creatures delighted everyone onboard as they glided through the crystal-clear waters, leaving a trail of wonder in their wake.

But the true highlight of the day awaited us at 1:30 PM when an enigmatic creature made its grand entrance – the Rough-toothed Dolphin (Steno bredanenis). This mysterious species enchanted all lucky enough to witness its presence.

One of the most intriguing features of the Rough-toothed Dolphin is its unique dental characteristics. As the name suggests, its teeth are unlike those of other dolphins, boasting a rough texture adorned with numerous tiny bumps and ridges. These dental adaptations remain a fascinating subject for marine biologists and enthusiasts alike.

Beyond the shores of Madeira Island, the Rough-toothed Dolphin boasts an impressive global range, preferring the warm and tropical waters of oceans worldwide. Their rare appearances make encounters with these elusive beings all the more extraordinary.

Social beings by nature, Rough-toothed Dolphins are often found in large groups, ranging from just a few individuals to over a hundred. Their playful and curious demeanor frequently leads them to ride waves and interact with boats, leaving a lasting impression on all fortunate enough to encounter them.

With remarkable diving skills, these dolphins can reach depths of up to 600 meters in search of their preferred prey, such as squid and various small fish species. Such adaptations allow them to thrive in a vast array of marine environments.

Yet, amidst the awe-inspiring sight of these majestic creatures, we must be mindful of their conservation status. While globally distributed, the Rough-toothed Dolphin faces threats from human activities, including accidental entanglement in fishing gear and pollution. As responsible stewards of the ocean, we must unite our efforts to safeguard their habitats and ensure their continued existence.

Today’s sightings were a true testament to the rich biodiversity and wonders that the seas surrounding Madeira Island hold. Each moment spent with these magnificent creatures reminds us of the importance of preserving and cherishing our marine ecosystems. Until next time, let us treasure the beauty of our oceans and the fascinating creatures that inhabit them!
