Today, we share the exciting and captivating sightings that unfolded on the boats Ribeira Brava and Stenella, off the breathtaking shores of Madeira Island.

At 9:30 AM, the magic began with the appearance of the graceful Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) and the majestic Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris). These splendid marine creatures delighted everyone onboard as they glided through the crystal-clear waters, leaving a trail of wonder in their wake.

But the true highlight of the day awaited us at 1:30 PM when an enigmatic creature made its grand entrance – the Rough-toothed Dolphin (Steno bredanenis). This mysterious species enchanted all lucky enough to witness its presence.

One of the most intriguing features of the Rough-toothed Dolphin is its unique dental characteristics. As the name suggests, its teeth are unlike those of other dolphins, boasting a rough texture adorned with numerous tiny bumps and ridges. These dental adaptations remain a fascinating subject for marine biologists and enthusiasts alike.
