            24.05.2023 – Bottlenose dolphin day

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on May 31, 2023

Bottlenose dolphins everywhere! This morning our guests observed two different groups of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). But there were other pods of this species of dolphin spread out on our oceanic doorstep. The animals of both groups moved leisurely through the sea. These animals are safe in our waters. Unfortunately, this is not the case everywhere. Bottlenose dolphins and other species (Pilot whales, Striped dolphins, Risso dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, etc.) are hunted off the coast of Japan. A small bay called Taiji becomes a chilling horror scene between May and September. The animals are driven into the bay and killed there. It is incomprehensible that such cruelty can still happen today. The following link will take you to our petition page. There they can speak out against the terrible actions.

Also in the afternoon there were various groups of Bottlenose dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins have slightly less brain mass than humans for their size. However, the folding is more pronounced with a larger surface area. This folding is particularly evident in the neocortex area, suggesting the ability for complex thought processes and self-awareness. Bottlenose dolphins, like humans and great apes, have specialized brain cells called spindle neurons that control complex emotions. So they are very capable of accurate perception on an emotional and intellectual level.
