            31.10.2023 – Spooky 6 meter jumps

Published by Paula Thake on November 7, 2023

Get ready for a splash-tastic adventure as we dive today into the world of  Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and their jaw-dropping frontal breaches! Today these aquatic acrobats that are known for their incredible leaps, soared high above the waves leaving all of us breathless. Are you maybe wondering how high can they go? Well, hold onto your snorkels, because these dolphins can catapult themselves up to an astonishing 7 meters into the air! That’s like having a two-story building suddenly emerge from the sea! Talk about a sky-high performance!

But why, oh why, do they embark on this gravity-defying endeavor? It turns out, there are a few fin-tastic theories. Some believe they do it for the sheer thrill of it, others think it’s a way to communicate or signal to their pod members. Imagine having a dance party in the sky to say “Hello, friends!” Now that’s a party we’d all love to attend!

And just before we thought the show was over, we saw some Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) jump! These dolphins aren’t one to be outdone. With their signature snub noses and lively spirit, they launch themselves in a whirl of fins and froth, giving the Atlantic spotted dolphins a run for their money.

Next time you’re lucky enough to witness a Atlantic spotted dolphin breach or a Bottlenose dolphin jump, remember to give them a round of applause. These marine maestros are putting on a show that’s out of this world!
