Off Madeira’s coast, it is said that it is possible to see 26 species, i.e. one third of all possible marine mammal species. Of this third, there are species that have only been sighted once off Madeira’s coast and species that are absolutely rare to see here. But one morning there was the absolute jackpot tour. Only once in the 13 years I’ve worked here have I had a tour with one more sighting. Today, however, there were six different marine mammals on the Stenella tour. Almost a record! I advised our guests on the morning tour: ‘Play the lottery today!’ At lunchtime, our guests had fewer species, but still very nice encounters. Days like this, even after more than twenty years as a whale watching guide, are unforgettable and special. The total number of different marine mammals discovered by our spotter during the day today was eight. Great success, Drumond!
