            30.12.2020 – A typical duo

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on January 8, 2021

In today’s waves a school of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) surfed happily and, as so often, we also met Short-finned Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in their vicinity. This is a typical duo. These two marine mammal species are often found together off Madeira, but also elsewhere. It would be very interesting to find out why these two species of dolphins merge so often. It will probably not be the food, because they have different preferences. Another unsolved mystery.

At the end we had a larger school of the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), which looked tiny compared to their flipper friends. This species of dolphin is known for its interaction with the boats and so it was today.

And not to forget, take the chance at the end of the year to stand up for these wonderful animals, sign the petitions.
