            27.06.2018 – Many mini hopers

Published by Marlene Cabral on July 6, 2018

During our trip today we had two different species from the shy kind, Striped dolphins and Beaked whales. The speedy Striped dolphins were sociable and we were able to admire their beauty in the bow of the boat. Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) are usually cautious when it comes to boat contacts but today we were treated with one of these close moments.

The name is due to the fact that two strips run from the eye to the flipper (the lower one of these bands widens up towards the flipper) and one strip runs along the flank towards the tail. On our pictures from today you can see it very well.

The group had lot of offsprings and the animals were very interactive in between each other. Little calves need to learn and adapt very quickly to all group behaviours, since this can be essential for survival. The tiny calves bounced in common mode with the adults and it looked quite jolly. Calves of this species are nursed with fat rich mother‘s milk (40-60%) for 1,5-2 years.

We waited patiently for the Beaked whales to appear, but unfortunately they didn‘t show up. Presumably they were Blainville Beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris), but due the long distance a positive identification was not possible.
