Winter, like summer, it’s always nice to go out with us. Even today, with summery temperatures, we were drawn out to sea. The Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that we first met are called our ‘winter’ dolphins because they prefer cooler waters. The Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), on the other hand, which were next to join our bow wave, are affectionately referred to by us as ‘summer’ dolphins. And to round off the tour, the Common dolphins showed up again at the end. Both species occur seasonally off Madeira’s coast and luckily there are overlaps in the observation times of these two dolphin species.
Both, Atlantic spotted dolphins and Common dolphins were very interactive today. Watching them in the bow wave of the Ribeira Brava was a real pleasure. As I said, summer, like winter, to go out with us is nice.
