It was a long drive in the morning, passing Capo Girão almost to Camara do Lobos. Even if we only had a brief encounter, it was worth it. Two small bottlenose dolphin calves (Tursiops truncatus) were accompanied by their mother into our bow wave. Such a beautiful moment.
In the evening it happened that our two sightings were on our doorstep. Bottlenose dolphins moved relaxed west. A group of seven Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) made occasional appearances. At first the distance was large, but patience is required with this species. It’s worth to invest time. It’s true that these shy whales don’t always come face-to-face, but if you approach them with finesse, you have a better chance of a special encounter. We could hear the whales breathing and watch their serene swimming almost in slow motion. Very relaxed, no stress, having all the time in the world… even while staying with this whale species you can take a little wisdom with you for your own everyday life. Always create times to relax, to pause and take in the moment instead of already thinking about the next step.
