            21.03.2023 – An infamous duo

Published by Paula Thake on March 29, 2023

Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and the Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are the infamous duo when it comes to humanity’s ancient fascination for dolphins. While common dolphins decorate art pieces and fill stories in Minoan and ancient Greek and Roman artefacts, Bottlenose dolphins, with their adaptive nature and broad distribution, remain the best researched cetaceans.

Our tours were filled with sightings of the infamous duo today and, despite some long searches, managed lovely encounters with both of them! Both species live in groups that consist of carefully selected companions, with Bottlenose dolphins even showing cases of lifelong friendships. These companionships are crucial to the survival of both species out in the ocean and are often demonstrated through the synchronous swimming of two or more individuals and frequent body contact. All this could be observed during our encounters with the dolphins and showed us all, once again, how social and intelligent these top predators are!
