20.06.2023 – The biggest surprise ever

Published by Marlene Cabral on June 27, 2023

Today’s voyages aboard the Stenella and Ribeira Brava boats were nothing short of extraordinary. Nature’s grand spectacle unfolded before our very eyes, leaving us in awe of the wonders that reside in the vast oceanic realm.

The enchantment began with the graceful presence of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), their playful antics captivating the onlookers. Gliding alongside them were Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis), gracefully skimming the water’s surface with effortless elegance. The sighting became even more exhilarating as we encountered the enigmatic Man o’ war (Physalia physalis) drifting effortlessly on the ocean currents. Their vibrant hues commanded attention, reminding us of the diverse life  that thrives beneath the waves. Just when we thought the experience couldn’t be topped, the majestic short-finned Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) emerged from the depths, their presence commanding respect and admiration. Little did we know our day was about to get even better when we spotted a Hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena) just swimming meters away from the boat, a really quick moment that meant a lot for everyone. We say little because it felt like it was just our lucky day when we received the call of two Sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) just some miles out from were we where.  Imagine the excitement we felt once we arrived and they breath just next to us. They were going fast and allowed us to see them next to us and also under. We all got really emotional as the third biggest whale in the world had just breath next to us.

Today’s sightings were a testament to the awe-inspiring diversity of marine life in Madeira. The Stenella and Ribeira Brava boats carried passengers on an unforgettable journey, where Bottlenose dolphins, Cuvier’s shearwaters, Man o’ war, Pilot whales, Hammerhead shark and even two Fin whales took center stage. These encounters will forever be etched in our memories as a reminder of the breathtaking beauty that lies beneath the ocean’s surface.
