18.04.2015 – (MOLA mola)

Mola mola ist der wissenschaftliche Name für den Mondfisch und diesen gab es auf unserer Morgentour zu sehen. Wussten Sie schon, dass ein Mola mola ein Knochenfisch ist?  Ausgewachsen kann er eine Größe von 3,30 m und ein Gewicht von 2,3 Tonnen erreichen. Unserer war allerdings kleiner.  Mondfische gehen bis in eine Tiefe von fast 500 m. Wenn sie an die Oberfläche kommen, sieht man die Rückenflosse aus dem Wasser ragen, oder sie liegen auf der Seite. Beides konnten wir heute beobachten. Solch ein Mondfisch, ob es “unserer” war wissen wir nicht, wurde an der Strand von Calheta gespült, so wie unsere Zeitung Dario de Noticias am 21.4.2015 berichtet.  Gewöhnliche Delfine gab es auf beiden Touren. Am Nachmittag waren verschiedenste Gruppen großflächig verteilt und am Jagen.

Mola mola is the scientific name for the sunfish and one of these we spotted on our morning tour. Did you know that a Mola mola is a bony fish? Fully grown they can reach a size of 3.30 m and a weight of 2.3 tonnes. Ours however was smaller. Sunfishes go to a depth of almost 500 m. When they come to the surface, you can see the dorsal fin sticking out of the water, or they lay on the side. Both behaviour we could observe today. Such a sunfish, we don’t know if it was “ours”, was found dead at the beach of Calheta, like the madeiras newspaper Diario de Noticias wrote on the 21.4.2015. Encounters with Common Dolphins we had on both tours. In the afternoon diverse groups were spread over a large area and were hunting.
