Today was nothing short of magical here in Madeira as we were treated to a breathtaking display of nature’s beauty—the playful presence of three enchanting dolphin species: Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), and Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba).
We were able to see the resident group of bottlenose dolphins, swimming calmly along the coast. It was so nice to see them so close, it even seemed like the whole pod was gathered today, something that is a little bit unusual to see.
After seeing them just some meters in front the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins made their impressive appearance with their very distinctive spots. They’re known to be incredibly agile and often ride the bow waves of boats, showcasing their playful nature as they effortlessly glide through the water. And surely they did that today.
Later in the afternoon we were able to spot one of the most difficul dolphins to photograph: Striped Dolphins. Recognizable by their striking striped patterns, these dolphins added a dash of elegance to our sightings. They’re remarkable deep divers, capable of plunging hundreds of meters below the surface in search of food, showcasing their impressive diving abilities.
Each of these dolphin species has its own unique characteristics, but they all share one thing in common—the ability to captivate and inspire awe with their grace and beauty. Madeira’s waters are truly a haven for these marvelous creatures, and today’s sightings were a testament to the wonders that await in the depths of the Atlantic.
We feel immensely privileged to have witnessed such a diverse gathering of marine life and can’t wait to see what other wonders the ocean has in store for us here in Madeira!
