Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are absolutely fascinating creatures that never fail to surprise us with their adaptive and intelligent nature, an attribute that along with their social nature has made them extremely successful animals in todays ever changing ocean.
Despite this, caution and vigilance is always required during a sighting with these impressive dolphins. They belong to Madeira’s most important predators, with several coastal ecotype individuals even forming part of a resident population that our region shares with the Canary Islands.
It is extremely important that our activity as whale-watchers does not disrupt this relationship. Oceanic habitats need their predators and their predators need them.
