With a high but gentle swell we went today to a world of champion sighting! Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) wallowed in the waves after their dive. First came one, then two, then three … of those big toothed whales. In the end, there were seven animals in the group. We observed socializing behavior; animals who turned to one side so that part of the fluke were sticking out of the water; they popped their huge heads out of the sea or they simply lay very close to each other, body to body, and certainly enjoyed being together. A wonderful encounter after days of storm and, moreover, with true world champions. How come? Sperm whales are animals of superlatives
• They are the largest predators, but they have the lowest birth rate in the world
• In her head, which occupies one-third of the body length, is the largest brain of all living things
• Heart weighs about 125kg (as much as two adult men)
• Male sperm whales can become four times longer than their female counterparts.
• With their echolocation system they can produce one of the loudest noises in the animal kingdom.
What a wonderful luck we had today to meet these seven world champions. 🙂
