Did the Vikings ever made a stopover in Madeira during their maritime wanderings? Enjoying the sun, after being always cold up there in the far north? We don’t know it, no corpus found until now. But today, indeed, we had a cheerful group of “modern” vikings on board (Ribeira Brava). They followed enthusiastic and interested the sightings of Atlantic spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.
At the evening trip with Stenella, the dolphin “dreamteam” was then replaced by several spermwhales far off the coast. One after another we found – guided from spotter Carlos- four of the deep diving champions at the surface. Two of the whales with the big head were swimming quite a while side by side. In the end, they synchronisly raised their majestetic flukes and went down on a dive. Since Sperms often stays in the deep for more than 20 minutes, it was time to sail back to the coast.
