Dolphins may look fairly alike, almost indistinguishable from afar but all are indeed different! Such differences aren’t only apparent in slight variations in physical appearance within the same species but are also seen in their personalities. Dolphins are intelligent creatures so variations in character are undeniable and often clearly visible during a sighting.
The more curious of the bunch tend to be the first to approach and engage in a bow-ride and, the particularly curious, often dash off but repeatedly return for more. Other, more weary members of the pod, keep their distance until they feel convinced that an interaction may not be such a bad idea.
Todays group of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) demonstrated this fact in the most entertaining way and the close encounters also allowed our guests to admire the more curious gang members a little more closely. Several mothers with their calves even joined in with their little calves, an absolute joy for our guests.
The big group of spotted dolphins were followed by a sighting of a tiny group of Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the company of tiny calves. In contrast to the spotted dolphins, these gorgeous dolphins completely avoided our boat and preferred some quality family time in peace, which soon prompted us to head back to the marina and conclude this delightful morning.
