Today it’s been a day of Odontocetes. Every tour saw some form of toothed whale from tiny Atlantic Spotted Dolphin (Stenella frontalis) to the giant Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus). Yes, Sperm Whale ! A lone large male gave us a great showing this afternoon with a beautiful fluke. Luck on luck on luck—or is it? Surely luck isn’t possible on a day like the 13th ? As a lowly guide, I continue to be in awe of the coordination between spotter and captain. It is only through their keen eyes, sharp boat handling, and deep local knowledge that we can even place ourselves with a chance of seeing many of our fantastic deep diving friends. Long may this perfect partnership continue to work, and long may the whale sightings continue.
