13.02.2018 – Down to the Bone

Published by Marlene Cabral on February 26, 2018

A good weather forecast is expected for the upcoming week and right at the start of the day, we had a nice sighting of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), one of deep diving species that hunt in the great Ocean deeps. Deeps that often reach several hundreds of meters were Sperm whales hunt, mainly for cephalopods. In order to reach this deeps and withstand the pressure variations, one of the evolutive features can be found in the bone composition of deep diving cetaceans. The internal cavities are filled with oil (lipid) reserves, wich help prevent and minor the effects of drastic pressure changes.
