When whales move through the sea, this is a good sign. Because these whales are very important for this wet element. But not only that! They are important to every guest on our boat, to every reader of this blog, and of course to all the others on our planet. Whales are over a small detour great oxygen dispenser if you will. This small detour leads across the intestine of the whale and the end product, the feces are extremely nutrient-rich. An elixir of life for zooplankton, but also for phytoplankton, our blue lung. So these whales not only take out of their habitat, what they need for food, they also give back. Good, if mankind would make this principle his own.

Today we saw Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) roaming our waters. We were able to experience how they plunged into the depths with proudly raised tails. We were there when they changed course and swam towards us. Individual animals gathered in a small group. A little girl named Anni sang for the whales and they seemed to like it very much, as they came closer and closer. A spyhop (head out of the water) here and there and also right in front of the bow of the Ribeira Brava. Could they hear Annis song? Yes, I am absolutely sure, because the bulbous trunk of the Ribeira Brava is a wonderful soundbox. Incidentally, Anni sang “Brother Jakob”. A song for whales and oxygen for us! Thanks, Anni, Thanks whales.
