12.07.2023 – A Spectacular Day of Wildlife Sightings in Madeira

Published by Paula Thake on July 20, 2023

Welcome to our daily wildlife sightings blog, where we bring you the most exciting and memorable encounters with the diverse marine life in the beautiful waters of Madeira. Today’s sightings in Ribeira Brava and Stenella have been nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing the incredible biodiversity that thrives in these pristine Atlantic waters.

The day kicked off with a splash as the clock struck 9:30. Our lucky observers in Ribeira Brava were greeted by the playful presence of the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) and the lively common dolphin (Delphinus delphis). These sleek and acrobatic dolphins mesmerized onlookers with their elegant leaps and synchronized swimming, creating a spectacle of grace and agility.

Over at Stenella, a remarkable diversity of marine life captivated observers. The morning expedition at 9:30 treated lucky visitors to the sight of Atlantic spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and common dolphins dancing in harmony. These sightings underscore the importance of these waters as a vibrant habitat for a wide range of marine species.

At 14:00, a truly special encounter unfolded as the magnificent Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris). The appearance of this rare and elusive species added a touch of mystery and awe to the already exhilarating experience.

As the day neared its end, the magic continued with a sighting at 17:00 that left everyone in awe. Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, and even a graceful loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) salute the tourists. The gentle movements of the dolphins contrasted with the serene presence of the loggerhead turtle, reminding us of the delicate balance and interconnectedness of the marine ecosystem.

Today’s sightings in Ribeira Brava and Stenella provided us with unforgettable encounters with some of Madeira’s most captivating marine inhabitants. The Atlantic spotted dolphins, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, Blainville’s beaked whale, and loggerhead turtle all contributed to a day filled with wonder and appreciation for the incredible biodiversity that calls Madeira’s waters home. Join us again for more daily wildlife sightings as we continue to explore the remarkable marine world that surrounds us.
