Today, our guests have definitely been practiced in the art of patience! Incidentally, this is one of the top qualities you should bring with you when observing nature. Luckily our guests had them in their luggage!
We went far, in search of Sperm whales, which, however, as it is their nature, dived … unfortunately, unfortunately, before our guests, they saw. Yes, this happens unfortunately sometimes. A Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) worked its way through the waves. After that it was long, long way towards shore!
And then everything happened at once! Speedy, interactive Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) came into the bow wave of the Ribeira Brava and let themselves be admired. Afterwards, in the immediate vicinity, a resting school of Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), in the middle of which there was a calf. Shortly after, we saw a group of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Among them was “The one with without!”. One of the dolphins lacks a large part of the dorsal fin, so he is with without (dorsal fin).
Maybe the dorsal fins of the dolphins look almost identical at first sight? They definitely are not! They are even used for identification. What is the fingerprint of humans is the dorsal fin for dolphins.
And what did everyone understand as well? Yes, never give up hope!
Here’s one more request: today in Taiji / Japan an entire school of Pilot whales was wiped out in the most brutal way! Please sign against these acts of violence:
