Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are resident off Madeira’s coast all year round. That doesn’t mean we see them every day. Today they were extremely active. We saw a lot of great jumps. When these dolphins come completely out of the water, you can see their impressive size. They are real power packages. An adult can weigh up to 650 kg. We saw them on both the midday and evening tours.
On both trips there were also Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). The group of Beaked whales consisted of one male, several females and two small calves. How cute they looked. At noon they calmly passed our boat. In the evening they behaved more cautiously. But the male has shown us well.
