Today the wind and waves showed what they are capable of. The trip headed west. A group of Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) lingered in the ups and downs of the waves. Some were resting, others were enjoying being carried forwards by the waves.
A second group of Pilot whales was in the company of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The journey continued to a school of Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). We could see them well from a distance, but this species is not one of the interactive species of dolphins. Nevertheless, we saw them well.
Striped dolphins have a characteristic stripe pattern that runs from their eye to their tail fin. They are dark and stand out against the grey to bluish body colour. This makes them easily recognisable. They are known for their acrobatic leaps. We saw some of them today.
