Today there was a combination of Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) on most tours. These two species seem to enjoy each other’s company. And we enjoyed the encounter with these wonderful marine mammals.
Both species have a few things in common. They both belong to the toothed whale category. They form so-called nursery groups and the mothers support each other, taking it in turns to provide babysitting services.
However, there is one factor that definitely sets them apart. While Bottlenose dolphins live in a hierarchical system, Pilot whales join together in a matriarchy.
