            09.05.2018 – Another “common” day

Published by Marlene Cabral on May 16, 2018

The Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are our beautiful winter dolphins. With their elegance and beauty they are far away from being common but in former times they were a widespread species in our oceans and it was indeed very common to meet them out at sea. Today in the best sense we had another super “common” day since we encountered two huge schools of common dolphins in very close range. Bow wave riding from the best, delighted guests and a little girl which made the future decision to be a guide as profession and therefore always together with dolphins. I admit that this is a decision that I can totally understand; it surely is the VERY BEST JOB in the WORLD. So little girl, go for it and follow your heart!

We also had a very interesting question on board today. Do dolphins have a sense of smell? No! They lack an olfactory nerve and associated lobes. For that reason they do not smell. Due to their excellent sense of taste, they receive numerous information from their environment through chemical messengers in the water.
