One of this booking team members has its birthday today: our Marlene! And where did she spend the day with her family? On the sea… what a great choice :)!
Because today there were dolphins on our birthday tour. First a small, sleepy group of Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) followed by various groups of Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). In the last pod, the animals were in a jumping mood.
Since it is BIRTHday today … how does a birth in marine mammals work? Dolphins come tail first into the world, so they can not drown. In order to improve the ability to glide through the birth canal and thus facilitate the birth, the tail is rolled up and the dorsal fin still not stable. The umbilical cord ruptures as soon as the newcomer slips out of the mother. Either the calf finds its way to the surface alone, but if it does not work mama or the assisting midwife helps the little one up the the surfaceto his first BREATHer. During the birthing process, the group protects the mother by placing her and the midwife in her midst. Take a deep breath and imagine that!
Happy Birthday, Marlene!
