On this clear Sunday morning, Stenella travelled through the calm waters of the Atlantic while the sea surface glistened in the early sun. Several groups of playful Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) took the opportunity to ride the bow wave of the boat. They glided through the water with impressive speed and grace, their characteristic black spots glowing in the sunlight.
The dolphins jump and dive. Their elegance and energy are breathtaking. Their playful nature is clearly visible as they compete to see who can make the highest jump or the most elegant turn. This Sunday morning shows the dolphins in all their lively splendour, a picture of playfulness. The Atlantic spotted dolphins use the waves of the boat not only for fun, but also to demonstrate their incredible dexterity and intelligence. It is an unforgettable spectacle that fills the hearts of all who witness it with joy.
On the way back, the majestic Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) suddenly emerge from the depths of the ocean. Their appearance is quiet and graceful, with hardly a ripple disturbing the smooth surface of the water. They move calmly and meditatively along Madeira’s coast. These rare marine mammals move in an elegant, almost hypnotic manner, their beaks just above the surface of the water. Their slow, deliberate movements give them an aura of wisdom and calm, as if they are gliding through the ocean in deep contemplation. The sea seems to mirror their meditative state, the waves move in a gentle, calming rhythm. It is a precious, peaceful moment that shows the deep connection between these extraordinary creatures and their marine home.
On our midday tour, a group of Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) swam lively around our boat. The calves were particularly adorable, staying close to their mothers and curiously observing our presence. You could literally feel the bond between the mothers and their young. Some of the adults showed off their acrobatic skills and performed impressive jumps. The group seemed to be in perfect harmony, their movements synchronised and full of grace. Such close encounters are often unforgettable. The beauty and intelligence of these fascinating creatures was palpable, and their playfulness and curiosity filled us with joy and wonder. The dolphins seemed to be on a cosy course with our boat and gave us a very special nature experience.
In the evening it became active again. Atlantic spotted dolphins and Cory shearwaters hunted flying fish together. The latter did not have an easy game, as they were in danger both above and below the water.
