The weather is always our companion, deciding whether we can go out or not. Our Ribeira Brava couldn’t go out this morning. In the afternoon it was possible. Successfully! Both boats saw three species of marine mammals: Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). What do all three species have in common? They are dolphins. What are the differences? The gestation period! For Atlantic spotted dolphins it is nine months, for Bottlenose dolphins 12 months and for Pilot whales 16 months. We had another unusual sighting at sea: dancing raindrops on the sea surface.
