We kicked off this fine day with a lovely group of snorkelers this morning that were all eager to meet some Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) out in the open ocean. We had to engage in a few trial runs before we finally managed an underwater sighting but the determination of our participants was rewarded with a large group of animals of age classes hovering underneath us. Everyone who takes part in such an experience can agree that it’s absolutely magical and we were thrilled to return to the marina with a boat full of happy clients.
The day continued on an amazing note with sightings of Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and a handful of curious Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis). The latter were even swimming close to the pilot whales during the sighting, an interesting interaction that left our crew guessing what the reasons behind the association may be.
Well, cetaceans often have us happily guessing about all sorts of things. They are simply happiness represented in an intelligent, hydrodynamic form and we are so lucky to enjoy their company at sea!
