On our wonderful morning tour we had the big ones, Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and the small ones, Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), approaching us curiously. The curious approach of the Sperm whale calf was a very special gift.
Our spotters’ best friends, the Cory’s shearwaters, also made an appearance. Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) often breed in large colonies on steep cliffs or remote islands and are able to travel great distances during their annual migration. Their appearance close to shore is often an indication of the presence of schools of fish and other prey in the water. At this time of year, they are already on their journey. I wonder if today’s Cory’s shearwaters are a flight delay?
