Today both boats had the chance to observe our winter dolphins, the Short-beaked Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). These dolphins with their special drawing are beautiful. Although we arrived in January, we haven’t seen the wintry dolphin variant often this winter yet.
Our boat Stenella was lucky enough to meet a sweet, plump mermaid. The monk seal (Monachus monachus) drifted serenely on the surface of the water. The heart-shaped nostrils (see photo) look cute to fall in love with. Of the three different variants, we come across the rare Mediterranean monk seal. These are almost extinct due to the earlier hunt. There is a small colony of this cute seal on the Desertas Islands. It is also occasionally found on Calheta’s coast. To get to their prey, smaller fish, crustaceans, cephalopods and occasionally mussels. For this, they are able to go to a diving depth of 50-70 meters.
Our sweet, plump seal mermaid seemed to be really enjoying herself. Our guests were happy about it.
