Today our day was filled with marine marvels and fascinating facts that will leave you awe-inspired. So, strap on your life vests and let’s dive right into the depths of these enchanting encounters, complete with their scientific names!
Our first sighting was the one and only resident from Calheta – Madeira: The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), with its massive size it made the beginning of our journey exciting and heartwarming. Did you know that Bottlenose dolphins are known for their signature whistle sounds, which are unique to each individual? They use these whistles to communicate with one another, forming complex social bonds within their pods.
As the sun reached its zenith, we were treated to a cetacean extravaganza! The Bottlenose dolphins returned for an encore, but this time accompanied by the elusive Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris). This species is capable of reaching depths of up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Their mysterious behavior and infrequent sightings make them a rare and intriguing sight for marine enthusiasts. Although they are really shy towards boats they sawm along us calmly. But as if it wasn’t enough just minutes after the stunning Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) came to our bow. Their harmonious symphony of clicks, whistles, and calls made us discover an even more interesting ocean, as just couple of meters ahead the Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) drew closer towards us. Their streamlined bodies sliced through the water with grace and elegance, leaving us in awe of their agility. Striped dolphins are known for their impressive swimming speed, reaching up to 60 km/h (37 mph). Their dynamic jumps and spins are not only a joy to watch but also serve as a way to communicate and socialize with one another.
Our day of marine wonders was a testament to the sheer splendor of our oceans and the incredible variety of life they harbor. As we sail back to shore, let’s remember to cherish and protect these magnificent creatures and their fragile habitats. Until our next adventure, may the seas be filled with beauty and biodiversity for all to cherish and admire!
