Vor der gro\u00dfen Show waren wir kurz Zeugen, eines leider allzu h\u00e4ufig auftretendes Ereignis. Ein junger Gelbschnabelsturmtaucher (<em>Calonectris borealis<\/em>) ruhte mit etwas im Schnabel an der Wasseroberfl\u00e4che, und unsere Crew und unsere G\u00e4ste brauchten nicht lange, bis wir merkten, dass es sich um ein kleines, hellblaues St\u00fcck Nylon aus einem Fischernetz handelte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Verlassene oder verlorene Fischernetze, auch <em>Geisternetze<\/em>genannt, oder ihr zerrissenes Jetsam sind nur ein kleiner Teil des enormen Plastikproblems, das weltweit verschiedene Meeresvogelarten bedroht. Das giftige Material st\u00f6rt ihre \u00d6kosysteme in allen Formen und Gr\u00f6\u00dfen wie eine unvermeidliche Epidemie, die h\u00e4ufig geschluckt werden oder zu Verletzungen f\u00fchren. Das Absterben von Meeresv\u00f6geln, besonders in sehr abgelegenen Gebieten wie der ber\u00fchmten Insel Midway, macht diese Tiere zu echten Botschaftern f\u00fcr das Plastikproblem in unseren Ozeanen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Wie bei den meisten Meerestieren besteht eine der gr\u00f6\u00dften Gefahren, denen V\u00f6gel durch Plastik ausgesetzt sind, darin, sie f\u00fcr Beute zu halten und sie zu verschlingen. Es ist nicht nur eine hochgiftige Substanz, die in das Gewebe eindringt und das Tier langsam vergiftet, das Material verstopft auch M\u00e4gen und Atemwege, was dazu f\u00fchrt, dass der Wirt langsam verhungert und elendig stirbt. Scharfe Kunststoffteile k\u00f6nnen auch zu Verletzungen und inneren Blutungen f\u00fchren. Besonders betroffen sind die Mitglieder der charismatischen Meeresvogelfamilie der R\u00f6hrennasen (<em>Procellariiformes<\/em>), wie unser gesichteter Gelbschnabelsturmtaucher. Viele dieser hochpelagischen Vogelarten jagen mesopelagische, biolumineszierende Kreaturen, und finden solche farbige Kunststoffteile besonders verlockend. Sobald die Tiere ihre Verwechslung bemerken, sind sie aber nicht in der Lage, die Partikel wieder rauszuspucken, und sie haben einen kleineren Kaumagen als die meisten V\u00f6gel, welches dazu beitragen k\u00f6nnte, das unerw\u00fcnschte Material aus ihrem K\u00f6rper auszuscheiden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Die Trag\u00f6die gipfelt in ihrer rauesten Form auf Midway, einer abgelegenen Insel im Nordpazifik, die leider aus sehr traurigen Gr\u00fcnden bekannt ist. \u00d6kologen waren schockiert, als sie sahen, dass dieser wichtige Vogellebensraum mit toten Albatros-K\u00fcken \u00fcbers\u00e4t war, die nach dem Verzehr von Plastik, das ihnen von ihren unwissenden Eltern zugef\u00fchrt wurde, verhungert waren. Wie alle anderen R\u00f6hrennasen haben Albatrosse nur einen Nachwuchs pro Jahr, daher z\u00e4hlt jedes K\u00fcken f\u00fcr das \u00dcberleben der Population. Die jungen K\u00fcken sind nicht in der Lage, das giftige Material hoch zu w\u00fcrgen, das ihnen schlie\u00dflich den Magen verstopft, was zu einem unvermeidlichen, qualvollen Tod f\u00fchrt. Der Fotograf Chris Jordan hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht die Kadaver von Albatros-K\u00fcken zu fotografieren, deren M\u00e4gen mit Plastik gef\u00fcllt sind. Und ja, ich spreche in der Gegenwart; <em>sind<\/em>. Denn auch nachdem sich der K\u00f6rper des K\u00fckens zersetzt hat, bleiben die bunten Plastikkappen, Zahnseide, Nylongewebe usw. erhalten. Dies unterstreicht ja einen weiteren besorgniserregenden Aspekt des Plastik-Problems; der Stoff zersetzt sich nicht. Es wird einfach in winzig-kleine Teile vom Meer zerkleinert, welche als Mikroplastik bekannt sind, und als bioakkumulierende Stoffe im marinen Nahrungskette noch ein weiteres beuhruhigendes Problem hervorrufen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Mein Geburtstag war im November, die Begegnung mit diesem jungen Gelbschnabelsturmtaucher habe ich jedoch nicht vergessen, weil ich ein Teil dieses zutiefst beunruhigenden Problems bin. Deshalb ist die Konfrontation mit dem Plastik-Problem so schwierig und schmerzhaft f\u00fcr uns. Wir k\u00f6nnen nicht alle anderen beschuldigen. Wir alle benutzen es obwohl wir alle wissen, was damit geschiet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Dies ist kein fr\u00f6hlicher Blog, ich wei\u00df, aber wir k\u00f6nnen nicht einfach wegschauen und m\u00fcssen uns solche Tatsachen stellen.
