Sie werden auch &#8218;Suckerfish&#8216;, &#8218;Haisucker&#8216; oder &#8218;Walsucker&#8216; genannt. Mit einem saug\u00e4hnlichen Organ halten sie sich\u00a0an der Haut gr\u00f6\u00dferer Meerestiere, manchmal auch an Tauchern fest. Die Schiffshalter scheinen von ihren Wirtstieren zu profitieren, ohne sie zu beeinflussen (sog. Kommensalismus). Doch auch der Wirt profitiert. Die Schiffshalter reinigen die Haut ihres Wirts von Parasiten, kleinem Nekton, Zooplankton, Speiseresten und F\u00e4kalien. Die Schiffshalter profitieren von dieser Nahrungsquelle, lassen sich ohne gro\u00dfen Aufwand transportieren und halten sich im Schutz ihres Wirts auf.
