Doch wie wir bereits bei unseren Einweisungen erw\u00e4hnen, dienen Fotos nicht nur als Erinnerung. Sie erf\u00fcllen auch einen weiteren Zweck: Sie liefern Wissenschaftlern Daten, die dabei helfen, die Verbreitung und das Sozialverhalten der Wale und Delfine in unseren Gew\u00e4ssern besser zu verstehen. Besonders wertvoll sind dabei Aufnahmen von ungew\u00f6hnlichen Situationen, Auff\u00e4lligkeiten und charakteristischen Merkmalen der Tiere, anhand derer einzelne Individuen identifiziert werden k\u00f6nnen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Bei Delfinen und den meisten Walarten ist das wichtigste Identifikationsmerkmal die Hinterkante der R\u00fcckenflosse (Dorsalflosse). Dieser K\u00f6rperteil weist h\u00e4ufig Kratzer und Narben auf, die die Tiere im Laufe ihres Lebens durch verschiedene Ereignisse erhalten. Diese Muster sind f\u00fcr jedes Tier einzigartig. Bei Pottwalen (<em>Physeter macrocephalus<\/em>) und Buckelwalen (<em>Megaptera novaeangliae<\/em>) sind solche Narben am besten an der Schwanzfluke zu erkennen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">W\u00e4hrend die Markierungen an der R\u00fcckenflosse bei Gro\u00dfen T\u00fcmmlern (<em>Tursiops truncatus<\/em>) und Kurzflossen-Grindwalen (<em>Globicephala macrorhynchus<\/em>) zur Identifizierung genutzt werden und lokalen Forschern bereits geholfen haben, ans\u00e4ssige Populationen zu bestimmen, konnten wir heute auch Arten beobachten, die andere Identifikationsmerkmale besitzen. Bei erwachsenen Atlantischen Fleckendelfinen (<em>Stenella frontalis<\/em>) dienen die charakteristischen Flecken ebenfalls der Identifikation. Bei Rundkopfdelfinen (<em>Grampus griseus<\/em>) erf\u00fcllen die zahlreichen Narben, die den K\u00f6rper aufhellen, denselben Zweck. Selbst bei der Identifizierung von Walen und Delfinen zeigt sich also eine bemerkenswerte Vielfalt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Georgia,
