Ihr Geh\u00f6rgang ist weitgehend verschlossen, sodass sich das Schmalz zu einem festen Ohrpfropf ansammelt, der in Schichten w\u00e4chst, \u00e4hnlich wie die Jahresringe eines Baumes. Jede Schicht spiegelt die saisonalen Wanderungs- und Fresszyklen des Wals wider: Im Sommer in n\u00e4hrstoffreichen Gew\u00e4ssern fressen die Wale intensiv und produzieren hellere Wachsschichten, w\u00e4hrend sie im Winter, w\u00e4hrend der Wanderung zu w\u00e4rmeren Brutgebieten, fasten und dunklere Schichten bilden. Ein Hell-Dunkel-Paar entspricht in etwa einem Lebensjahr des Wals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Doch Ohrst\u00f6psel sind mehr als nur ein biologischer Kalender. Jede Schicht ist eine winzige Zeitkapsel, die chemische Hinweise aus diesem Moment im Leben des Wals bewahrt. Wissenschaftler k\u00f6nnen sie analysieren, um Stresshormone wie Cortisol zu messen, und so aufdecken, wie der Wal auf Ereignisse wie Nahrungsknappheit, L\u00e4rmbel\u00e4stigung oder menschliche Aktivit\u00e4ten reagiert hat. Sie k\u00f6nnen auch Schadstoffe wie Quecksilber und PCB nachverfolgen und zeigen, wie sich die Meeresverschmutzung \u00fcber Jahrzehnte hinweg ver\u00e4ndert und angesammelt hat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Ohrst\u00f6psel bieten allen Bartenwalen einen evolution\u00e4ren Vorteil, da sie das Ohr vor Druckver\u00e4nderungen, kaltem Wasser und Fremdk\u00f6rpern sch\u00fctzen und f\u00fcr ein stabiles H\u00f6rverm\u00f6gen unter Wasser sorgen.
