Portugiesische Seefahrer unter der F\u00fchrung von Jo\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alves Zarco und Trist\u00e3o Vaz Teixeira wurden auf einer Seereise durch einen starken Sturm vom geplanten Kurs abgebracht. Auf der Suche nach Schutz erreichten sie zuf\u00e4llig die bis dahin unbewohnte Insel Madeira. Die gesch\u00fctzte Lage der Bucht von Machico erwies sich als idealer Ankerplatz, da sie vergleichsweise ruhige Gew\u00e4sser bot und das sichere Anlanden der Schiffe erm\u00f6glichte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Machico gilt daher als Ort der ersten Anlandung und zugleich als Keimzelle der Besiedlung Madeiras. Schon kurze Zeit nach der Entdeckung begannen die Portugiesen, das umliegende Land zu erkunden und erste Siedlungsstrukturen aufzubauen. Die fruchtbaren B\u00f6den, das vorhandene S\u00fc\u00dfwasser und die g\u00fcnstige Lage beg\u00fcnstigten eine fr\u00fche landwirtschaftliche Nutzung. Machico entwickelte sich rasch zu einem wichtigen Ausgangspunkt f\u00fcr die Erschlie\u00dfung der Insel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">In den folgenden Jahrzehnten verlagerte sich das wirtschaftliche und politische Zentrum Madeiras jedoch zunehmend nach Westen. Funchal bot bessere Bedingungen f\u00fcr einen gr\u00f6\u00dferen Hafen und gewann durch den wachsenden Handel, insbesondere mit Zuckerrohr, an Bedeutung.
