Bereits kurz nach der Entdeckung Madeiras durch portugiesische Seefahrer im Jahr 1419 erkannte man die gesch\u00fctzte Lage dieser Bucht als idealen Ankerplatz. Die nat\u00fcrliche Form der K\u00fcste bot Schutz vor starkem Seegang und machte das Anlanden von Schiffen vergleichsweise sicher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Im Laufe des 15. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich Funchal schrittweise zu einem wichtigen Hafenstandort. Mit dem Beginn der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzung der Insel, insbesondere des Zuckerrohranbaus, gewann der Hafen zunehmend an Bedeutung. \u00dcber ihn wurden Waren exportiert und Versorgungsg\u00fcter aus Portugal und anderen Regionen eingef\u00fchrt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Der Hafen von Funchal wurde bald zu einem zentralen Knotenpunkt im atlantischen Handel. Er diente nicht nur dem Warentransport, sondern auch als Zwischenstation f\u00fcr Schiffe auf dem Weg nach Afrika, Amerika und sp\u00e4ter nach Indien. Im Jahr 1508 erhielt Funchal die Stadtrechte, was die Bedeutung des Hafens weiter unterstrich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde der Hafen kontinuierlich ausgebaut und an neue Anforderungen angepasst.
