Sie leben in den kalten Gew\u00e4ssern der Arktis und sind vor allem im Nordatlantik und im Arktischen Ozean verbreitet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Charakteristisch f\u00fcr Narwale ist ihr langer Sto\u00dfzahn, der ihnen den Beinamen \u201eEinh\u00f6rner des Meeres\u201c eingebracht hat. Der Sto\u00dfzahn ist kein Horn, sondern ein stark verl\u00e4ngerter linker Eckzahn, der bei vielen M\u00e4nnchen, seltener auch bei Weibchen, durch die Oberlippe w\u00e4chst. Er kann eine L\u00e4nge von bis zu drei Metern erreichen und besitzt eine spiralf\u00f6rmige Struktur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Lange Zeit galt der Sto\u00dfzahn als reine Waffe oder als Hilfsmittel zum Durchbrechen von Eis. Heute wei\u00df man, dass er eine wichtige sensorische Funktion erf\u00fcllt. Der Sto\u00dfzahn ist von Millionen feiner Nervenkan\u00e4le durchzogen, die Reize aus dem umgebenden Wasser aufnehmen. Narwale k\u00f6nnen damit Temperatur, Salzgehalt und Druckver\u00e4nderungen wahrnehmen. Diese F\u00e4higkeit hilft ihnen, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">sich in ihrer komplexen Umwelt zu orientieren und geeignete Jagdgebiete zu finden. Zus\u00e4tzlich spielt der Sto\u00dfzahn eine Rolle im sozialen Verhalten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">M\u00e4nnliche Narwale zeigen ihn bei Begegnungen, messen sich vorsichtig miteinander und kommunizieren \u00fcber Haltung und Bewegung. Der Sto\u00dfzahn ist damit kein aggressives Werkzeug, sondern ein sensibles Organ.
