Wir sind weit nach Westen gefahren und haben sogar den Leuchtturm von Ponta do Pargo, den westlichsten Punkt der Insel, passiert. Wenn man weiter nach Westen fahren w\u00fcrde, w\u00e4re das n\u00e4chste St\u00fcck Land die Bermuda-Inseln, die etwa 4450 km entfernt sind. Etwas n\u00e4her liegen die Kanarischen Inseln, die nur durch 450 km offenes Meer im S\u00fcden von uns getrennt sind. Geografisch gesehen liegt Madeira auf der afrikanischen tektonischen Platte, obwohl wir politisch zu Portugal und damit zu Europa geh\u00f6ren. Marokko ist nur 550 km von dieser Insel entfernt, w\u00e4hrend zwischen uns und der Algarve etwa 800 km offenes Meer liegen. All diese Isolation f\u00fchrte zur Entwicklung vieler endemischer Arten auf unserer Insel. Einige davon sind die Madeirataube (<i>Columba trocaz<\/i>), der Madeiragoldh\u00e4hnchen (<i>Regulus maderensis<\/i>), die Madeira-Eidechse (<i>Teira dugesii<\/i>) und der Madeira-Sturmvogel (<i>Pterodroma madeira<\/i>).
