Eine einzigartige anatomische Besonderheit ist das sogenannte Spermaceti-Organ. Dieses Organ liegt \u00fcber dem Oberkiefer des Pottwals und hat die Form eines l\u00e4nglichen Fasses. Es enth\u00e4lt weiches und schwammiges Gewebe, das mit Spermaceti ges\u00e4ttigt ist. Spermaceti ist eine wachsartige Substanz, von der Wissenschaftler glauben, dass sie zwei Funktionen hat. Die erste besteht darin, Ger\u00e4usche zu erzeugen, die zweite darin, den Auftrieb der Tiere zu unterst\u00fctzen. Letzteres trifft zu, da Spermaceti eine \u00e4hnliche Dichte wie Salzwasser hat, aber je nach Temperatur eine geringere oder h\u00f6here Dichte als Salzwasser aufweist. Durch die Ver\u00e4nderung des Blutflusses kann der Pottwal die Temperatur des Spermaceti und damit auch dessen Dichte ver\u00e4ndern. Da sich das Spermaceti-Organ direkt unter der Haut befindet und so schwammig ist, stellen Gr\u00f6\u00dfenver\u00e4nderungen aufgrund der Dichte\u00e4nderung f\u00fcr das Tier kein Problem dar.
