Als Methanquellen werden Orte bezeichnet, wo methanreiches Wasser austritt. Man sollte meinen, dass Leben unter diesen lebensfeindlichen Bedingungen nicht bis kaum m\u00f6glich ist.\u00a0 Doch das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Im Gegensatz zum Rest des Tiefseebodens, der d\u00fcnn besiedelt ist, stellen diese Gasquellen oft wahre Oasen in der Tiefsee dar. Doch wer hier \u00fcberleben will, muss hochspezialisiert sein. Die dort vorhandenen chemotrophen Bakterien sind in der Lage anhand von Chemosynthese Methan und Schwefelwasserstoff in organische Verbindungen umzuwandeln, die als Nahrungsgrundlage der anderen Methanquellenbewohner und deren Besucher dient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Bis jetzt wusste man, dass R\u00f6hrenw\u00fcrmer und Muschel dort reichlich zu finden sind. Doch nun wurde eine \u00fcberraschende Entdeckung gemacht, denn ein internationales Forscherteam fand heraus, dass Methanquellen eine entscheidende Rolle spielen, wenn es um die Kinderstuben von Tiefsee-Raubfischen und Rochen geht. Bei Haien unterscheidet man zwischen lebendgeb\u00e4renden Arten, eierlegenden und denen, die ihre Eier im Leib ausbr\u00fcten. Auch bei <em>Rochen<\/em> gibt es Unterscheidungen. Echte Rochen legen Eier, w\u00e4hrend bei fast allen anderen Rochenarten, die Jungtiere noch im Leib des Muttertiers aus dem Ei schl\u00fcpfen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Georgia, Palatino;\">Eierlegende Hai-und Rochenarten scheinen die festen Strukturen der Kalkgesteinausw\u00fcchse der Methanquellen gerne zu nutzen, um ihre Eiern einen Schutzraum, im sonst sehr schlammigen Meeresgrund der Tiefsee zu bieten.
