Die S\u00fcd-Westlage der Insel bietet Windschatten und sorgt ganzj\u00e4hrig f\u00fcr warme Temperaturen. Calheta geh\u00f6rt zu den w\u00e4rmsten Orten der Insel. Der Sandstrand, der an den Wochenenden auch Einheimische nach Calheta lockt, ist k\u00fcnstlich angelegt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Im Jahr 1502 wurden Calheta die Stadtrechte zugesprochen. Fr\u00fcher befand sich in dieser Gegend der Insel ein bedeutendes Zuckerrohranbaugebiet. Es gab sogar einen Zollposten der dazu diente Steuern auf den Zucker zu erheben. Der Zuckerrohr war einer der wichtigsten Anbauprodukte Madeiras. Die Zuckerrohrfabrik vor Ort wurde 1894 erbaut. Noch immer ist die Zuckerrohrm\u00fchle im aktiven Einsatz, der man beim Mahlen des Zuckerrohr zuschauen kann. Die Verarbeitungsmaschinen sind mittlerweile 100 Jahre alt und laufen immer noch auf Hochtouren. Im April ist Erntezeit und da der Zuckerrohr schnell verarbeitet werden muss, damit er nicht austrocknet, stehen in dieser Zeit die Maschinen nicht still und es wird rund um die Uhr gearbeitet. In dieser Zeit werden 70 Tonnen Zuckerrohr zu 5000 Liter Zuckerrohrschnaps und 3500 Liter Zuckerrohrhonig verarbeitet.
