28.07.2022 – Rough teeth, gentle soul

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on August 7, 2022

Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) are usually a guarantee of a good mood. They seek our contact, ride in the bow wave, are curious and very lively. In summer, we can see them here almost every day. For our guests, there is almost always an impressive sighting.

Today, however, we also had a rare and very welcome visitor. Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis), masters of synchronized swimming, used to frequent Madeira’s coast. With their white stripe along their lower jaws as if they’ve put on lipstick, their almost reptilian appearance, and their mottled skin, they look very unusual. They got their name because of the longitudinal grooves in their teeth, which are reminiscent of an almond, rubbing it makes it feel rough. However, their nature is sweet, gentle and friendly. They are very interactive dolphins. With them, it is usually a very cuddly encounter. They were first described by Georges Cuvier in 1823.
