            28.01.2021 Three animal components

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on February 1, 2021

When we went out this morning, a long swell ran over the surface of the sea, but it only broke on the coast. A rare guest, a Northern gannet (Morus bassanus) glided across the sea. A Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), which is not so often seen here in winter, rested leisurely on the surface of the water. But she was not very comfortable with us and whoosh, she dived.

Our next encounter consisted of three animal components. Two of our classic winter dolphins, the Short-beaked Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), had breakfast time. When it comes to hunting garfish, a very special technique seems to be needed. Slow approach, followed by sudden acceleration, paired with long, but flat jumps. If you look at the title photo, you can count how many animals there are in the photo. And a small series of pictures shows very clearly what has happened from the beginning of a hunt to the (for some) successful end.
