28.10.2020 Strong sisterhood in the ocean

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on November 4, 2020

It happened fast today. Out of the harbor and already we met a school of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). A smooth sea surface, the intense blue of the Atlantic and calmly swimming dolphins created an atmosphere as if we were gliding through the blue with these animals. Very nice!

The small group of Short-finned Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), consisting of one adult and some juvenile animals that we were able to observe next, were also in a very relaxed mood. Their breathing reminded to take a deep breath ourselves and just let the mind wander.

Our third encounter was special! Two young Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) , a calf and a juvenile had extraordinary contact with other Pilot whales. The juvenile was tail lopping and swam furious away. The calf was examined more closely by the Pilot whales. While the whale mom was submerged and hopefully successfully hunting, the little Sperm whale experienced its own little adventure on the surface.

Matriarchy! A form of society that is primarily shaped by women. A social order in which social and legal relationships are organized through the maternal line. With us rural residents, matriarchal social structures occur, but they can also be found in our blue office. In marine mammals, this can be seen in Pilot whales, Sperm whales and Orcas. In such social associations, the personal bond between the individual members of the group is extremely intense and supportive. A strong sisterhood in the ocean.
