            18.10.2019 – Elastic springs

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on October 26, 2019

The sea is changeable so fast. That’s how it was today. As we left the harbor, a few isolated foam caps appeared, but during our tour with the Ribeira Brava, it was a bit rocky. Nevertheless, we had nice sightings. Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) moved east and Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) had the opposite course, very convenient for us. The Spotted dolphins were again in large numbers on the way. And in a good mood for leaps! A leap was done backward turning around its own axis. Very impressive!

It almost looked like they have elastic springs. But the powerful tail functions like jet propulsion, which then catapults them into the air. And why do dolphins jump? Definitely to communicate with each other, but also for very pragmatic reasons, namely to get rid of old skin and parasites, or as part of hunting behavior.
