A great day filled with bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales today. Normally, we observe the whales and dolphins in pods (groups) of just one species. But today, the bottlenoses and pilot whales joined forces. They were swimming closely together in one group. When the pilot whales would dive down, the bottlenose dolphins would follow. Sometimes, the bottlenose dolphins would shortly leave the whales, to come swim in the bow wave. But they would quickly return to the mixed group again.
On the way back to Calheta, we found a dead Cory’s Shearwater bird in the water. It had swallowed a fishing line that had been set up with a boy. It made us very sad to find this bird, but hopefully spreading awareness might make a difference for other birds and sea life in the future.
